Pointe Du Hoc IV

Following the tire tracks back to a road, the Rangers venture about a mile from the coastline to discover three of the 155mm cannon heavily camouflaged, and unguarded with a group of German soldiers holding a meeting about 100 yards away. It appears they are the artillery men, waiting for a German counterattack to drive the Rangers back into the sea so they return to the Point to observe and fire on the invasion forces. The Rangers destroy the guns with thermite grenades and then discover the other three cannon which are also disabled by the grenades. At the same time another Ranger patrol locates a large ammunition dump south of the new German batteries and they blow that up. The men retreat to their positions at Point du Hoc to await German counterattacks. Their mission had been accomplished.
