The Airborne musuem at Nijmegen. At the right are some of the names of the 10lst personnel that were killed on the first day of the battle for the Island. Note two men from my Dad's platoon, Captain Froemke and Pvt. Richard Werner killed on the first day of the 11-day engagement. All toll in this struggle 275 Americans, 75 British, 800 Germans and a unknown number of Dutch civilians were killed. Two months after the battle started, the Germans decided to flood the area and a key dike was destroyed flooding the entire region. Because of this the area was unoccupied for months before finally liberated in late April, 1945 by the Belgian Brigade Piron at considerable loss.
