The Susan B

Susan B

Photograph of the sinking of the USS Susan B. Anthony taken by Bob Salley, H&S Headquarters, 326th AEB, taken on June 7, 1944. My Dad was one of the last men off and looked back to see that Captain Thomas Grey and the chief engineer going down with the ship. Since my Dad didn't want to see them die he turned his head. Just then the Susan B. hit bottom, allowing the two to swim safely away and making the sinking the greatest shipwreck in history as all 2,689 personnel survived. Photograph is from Mark Bando's book, "101st Airborne, The Screaming Eagles in World War II".Zenith Press, 2007.
